MRSA |
December 15, 2008 |
|
There
has been a lot of discussion and misinformation about the
occurrence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
infections at Connecticut’s correctional facilities. CMHC
in conjunction with the Connecticut Department of
Corrections (DOC) has established infection control policies
to minimize the risks of staff and inmate exposure to MRSA.
MRSA infections can range from mild skin infections to more
severe infections of the bloodstream, lungs and at surgical
sites. Invasive MRSA infections involve the blood or other
bodily fluids that are normally sterile, and they are the
most serious form of this disease. In Connecticut invasive
MRSA infections have been reportable to the state Department
of Public Health (DPH) since 2001. In 2008 there were 4
cases of invasive MRSA reported involving inmates in
Connecticut Correctional facilities. Non-invasive MRSA
infections are common in the community and are usually skin
infections, such as pimple and boils that occur in otherwise
healthy people. Non-invasive MRSA cases are not reportable
to the Department of Public Health. The best prevention for
picking up these types of infections is washing hands
regularly. The treatment for non invasive MRSA is either
antibiotics or thorough draining of the infected site with a
minor surgical procedure. Education about MRSA occurs at
inmate orientation and ongoing with inmates and custody
staff by CMHC health services staff. These education
efforts are to provide accurate information about MRSA and
to outline ways to minimize exposure. DOC, CMHC and DPH
have met and will continue to meet to review and enhance
educational efforts throughout the system. |

NCCHC Names York CI Facility of the Year
|
October 20, 2008 |
|
The National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC),
after conducting a re-accreditation visit at York
Correctional Institution in April 2008, selected York CI to
receive this year’s NCCHC Facility of the Year Award.
This prestigious award is presented each year to only one
facility selected from among the 500 prisons, jails, and
juvenile detention and confinement facilities that
participate in NCCHC’s nationwide accreditation program.
The accreditation surveyors and committee were impressed
with how the York CI staff consistently demonstrated
excellence in health service delivery and correctional
health care professionalism, and noted the variety of
positive programs available to the population.
The award was presented at a ceremony on October 20, 2008
in Chicago as part of the opening events of the NCCHC’s
National Conference on Correctional Health Care. Some two
thousand people from across the country were in attendance.
We congratulate the York CI health care and custody staff
who worked so hard to achieve and maintain the NCCHC
accreditation! This is truly a shining moment for CMHC and
CDOC! |

ACA Re-Accreditation: MacDougall-Walker
|
August 28, 2008 |
|
Congratulations and special thanks to Rich Furey, H.S.A., and
the MacDougall-Walker Health Services staff on completing a
successful American Correctional Association re-accreditation
visit.
Health services and custody staff achieved an overall score
of 99.5 percent! At the close-out summation, the surveyors
stated they were impressed with the professionalism of the
staff and the quality and scope of health services delivered
to a large population. These surveyor comments, after two
and one half days of intensive documentation review, tours,
and interviews, represents tremendous effort and
collaboration among all staff.
Again, great job, and many thanks for bringing pride to
yourselves and CMHC!
